We are a grilling family. Even with living in Connecticut, we grill all year round.
The grill just makes everything taste so much better and makes dinner feel so much easier - - especially since clean-up is minimal and anything that minimizes the mess in the kitchen is right by me!
A few weeks back I was in a pinch for dinner - I didn't have anything planned (which is not like me), we didn't have a lot of time (which is typical especially during my son's baseball season) and we were low on groceries.
I took inventory of what we had and threw together some turkey burgers with some simple ingredients that I always have stocked up in the house: ground turkey, cilantro, red onion, garlic powder, salt, pepper and ground flaxseed...yes you heard that right...ground flaxseed. And I have to tell you...they were out of this world.
More often then not, I'm the kind of person that can take a burger or leave it. I'm not overly in love with them as many are and my friend once laughed when I said I preferred a slider because of it's smaller size, than an actual burger (apparently the taste is not even comparable). But something about the combination of flavors in these turkey burgers had me hooked and in the few weeks since, we've had them at least three times.
Not only are they a quick and easy dinner, ground flaxseed provides a sneaky healthy twist.
Ground flaxseeds are loaded with nutrients that are so good for your body. Just one tablespoon will provide you with protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids and other vitamins and minerals. They help to support digestion, lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation and protect against disease. These powerful little seeds are nothing to shy away from and yet you would never even know that they were mixed into these burgers.
With Memorial Day Weekend upon us, I wanted to share this recipe as an option for you to include in your fun-filled weekend gatherings but don't leave it with the weekend - take it with you for a healthy alternative to any grill night.

Turkey Burgers with a sneaky healthy twist
1 lb. ground turkey
1/4 c. fresh cilantro, finely chopped
1/4 c. ground flaxseed
1/4 of a medium red onion, finely chopped
1/2 t. garlic powder
salt and pepper
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl form mixture into 4-6 patties. Grill for 4-5 minutes per side or until cooked through. Enjoy with your favorite salad, veggie or side!
