12 Days of Change - Day 11: overcoming emotional eating

If you eat your emotions, whether you're stressed, sad, frustrated, angry or anything else… Welcome to the club. You're not a failure. You didn't ruin everything. You don't lack willpower. You're human - with human emotions and a human brain that seeks comfort. Emotional eating is normal, but it doesn't have to be your norm. And if you want to change it here's what you can to do… Start to notice what emotions trigger you to reach for food. Explore this without judgement (remember - it's 100% normal). Notice what's happening when you reach for food and what sensations in your body seek comfort. Become acquainted with these feelings so you start to recognize them when they arise. Allow yourself to feel negative emotions - whatever they are for you. Most people struggle with this. Instead of feeling them, they try to numb them with food. But this just adds a layer of guilt - making you feel worse than before. One of the most empowering things you can do is to let yourself feel these emotions. Don't run and hide or try to numb them. Don't sweep them under the rug just to come back another day. Feel them - without judgement, without needing to make it better. Without food. if you need it - breath into these feelings with three shallow breaths and one long exhale and tell yourself “it's OK, I'm OK”. Then ask yourself what you really need. If you're honest with yourself, you may find that you need movement or some deep breaths. Maybe a conversation with a friend or a hug from a loved one - or silence. But rarely will you need food. Repeat these three steps until you start welcoming your emotions and know exactly how to handle them - without food.
